GPS track – Walking-in-Algarve – B&B Cas al Cubo

5.1 mi.  Easy   10m B&B Cas al Cubo

Barrocal walk is the first route we design in the winter of 2020. We strive to design more GPS tracks starting at our B&B Cas al Cubo because our guests can easily start their walk from the house then. This five mile circular route discovers the South-West area of our home just south of Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo.

Barrocal walk starts at B&B Cas al Cubo, which is located in the middle of the Barrocal. From the Bed and Breakfast Tavira we have plotted a route to the south through this specific landscape. This natural sub-region of the Algarve, situated between the hills and the coast, is characterised by the presence of several irregularly shaped limestone formations.  The height of these hills is up to 400 meters. We decide not to include the limestone hills (Cerro de Cabeça and Cerro São Miguel) in the south. We keep them for a different walk because including them would serve a huge challenge in terms of length. With this route we remain in the Barrocal more or less in a 7 mile circle around the guesthouse.

Originally, holm oak forests predominated in this region. Due to human intervention, today you will find more shrubs in the Barrocal such as Myrtle, Rosemary, (edible) Cistus Rose and planted trees such as Carob, Fig and Almond. The production plantations with citrus fruits and vineyards are even more recent. You walk amid that typical vegetation in the silence of the valley.

Bird Life

The Iberian Green Woodpecker “laughing”, the Hoopoe calling and a Little Owl wailing. Large groups of Goldfinches startle when we walk past. After about three kilometers, the walk passes an enclave of scattered houses and farms where you can view the most wonderful structures on the various yards. The variety of hamlets and paths in the middle of the bush make the walk interesting and the fact that it is almost flat makes it relaxed and suitable for everyone; big and small. Barrocal walk does not pass a restaurant or café, so if you like to sit down and take in the surroundings on the way, we recommend that you have something to eat and a drink. There are plenty of places to sit down and enjoy the silence and nature.
