Madeira

GPS route – Walking Algarve – Tavira

4.7 mi.  Easy   49m B&B Cas al Cubo

Madeira walk is a 4.7 mile circular route that starts at B&B Cas al Cubo in the Portuguese Algarve. This walk is an easy round trip that shows you everything the surrounding area has to offer. Round trip Madeira is done by most of our guests and it surprises every single one in a positive way. The walk is a round trip to the village of Santa Catarina do Fonte do Bispo where at halfway, you can have a large glass of orange juice at the local bakery/café, Madeiras Pao Quente. Walk Madeira begins by passing a sleepy hamlet, Cerro do Leiria, which has a true British bowling green where white sunhatted Ladies and gentlemen compete under the blazing sun. It passes fruit trees, crosses a river and shows majestic olive trees, especially in the Spring when the fields are a treat filled with coloured flowers.

After crossing the (mostly dry) riverbed, the road meanders alongside some Cork trees that are very distinctive for our area. You pass an old ‘donkey’ powered water well and an Apricot orchard, which has trees loaded with fruit in the month of June. Slowly, the first houses on the edge of Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo come in sight and so to our bakery Madeira with the promise of a refreshing drink. As you can see, we have named this walk after the village bakery.

The second leg of the walk is completely different, after your stay for lunch at Madeira you exit Santa Catarina south bound. At the olive press (open from November 1st until the middle of January when the olives are picked) you pass the little bridge next to the water treatment plant; follow the small stream (turtle alert) and enter the orange groves. From October onwards, the oranges start to colour and at the end of December the harvest starts. After crossing the riverbed once more and walking around the last hill our B&B comes into sight. Round trip Madeira has come to an end.

This walk is approximately 5 miles long. It can be combined with walks “Santa Catarina”, “Alquevinhos” or “Moinhos e Hortas”, which will create three different walks of 12 to 13 miles.
